Edwin L. Wessel, Trafalgar, Ind., passed away on Tuesday, August 20, 2013. He was born November 27, 1928 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Louis and Helen (Coughlin) Wessel, who preceded him in death. He married Shirley May Bradbury on January 3, 1953, and she survives in Franklin, Ind.
He graduated from Western Hills High School, Cincinnati, Ohio and The Ohio State University, where he was a member of the ROTC. He is a veteran of the Korean Conflict and served from 1953 to 1954 as First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.
After returning from Korea, he worked as a cattle buyer for Hy-Grade Cattle Company, pioneering the direct buying of fat cattle from individual farmers. A highlight of his buying career was traveling to farms by helicopter to purchase the cattle. In 1961, he joined Stadler Packing Company in Columbus, Ind., as a cattle buyer, retiring in 1984.
He purchased his farm in Trafalgar, Ind., in 1967, fulfilling a life-long dream of living on his own farm. By 1972, he began pursuing another goal of having a herd of "good black cows" by purchasing his first registered Angus cattle and establishing Wessel Angus, which continues today under the direction of his son Richard. He enjoyed gardening and farming and took great pride providing food for his family and friends. An average tomato crop was over a hundred plants.
He was a member of St. George Lutheran Church, Edinburgh, Ind. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Cincinnati, Ohio. He was also a member of the Indiana Beef Cattle Association, the Johnson County Beef Cattle Association, the American Angus Association, the Indiana Angus Association and the Southern Indiana Angus Association.
Also surviving are his children Barbara (Paul) Logsdon, Lima, Ohio; Elizabeth Anne Wessel, Springboro, Ohio; Richard (Betty) Wessel, Trafalgar, Ind.; and Linda (Christopher) Vensel, Westfield, Ind.; six grandchildren Daniel (Alexis) Logsdon, Sarah Logsdon, Helen Logsdon, Kevin Wessel, Laura Wessel and Alexandra Vensel.
Visitation is Friday, August 23, 2013 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 N. Morton St., (U.S. 31 North), Franklin Ind.
Service is at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 24, 2013, at St. George Lutheran Church, 10931 South 600 West, Edinburgh, Indiana 46124. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church. Burial follows at St. George Lutheran Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.
